What is a rash?
A rash can refer to a variety of skin conditions, but is generally defined as a visible change in the appearance of the skin, particularly in color and/or texture. This change may be characterized by itchy, scaly, bumpy, swollen, inflamed or irritated skin.
What are the symptoms of a rash?
Commonly, rash symptoms include redness or discoloration, inflammation, swelling, dryness, peeling, scaling, crusting, tenderness, soreness, pain and itching.
What causes a rash?
There are many different causes and types of rashes. These include:
Psoriasis
Rosacea
Infection (bacterial, fungal or viral)
Insect bites
Heat rash
Eczema
Stress
Allergies (to medications, food/drink, plants, chemicals/dyes, beauty products, etc.)
Sun Exposure
How do you treat a rash?
The treatment for a rash depends on the type and cause. Moisturizing creams or lotions can help reduce irritation and itching. Prescription topical medications or oral medications can help eliminate inflammation, itching, and swelling, or can treat a fungal, bacterial or viral cause. Antihistamines can relieve itching and allergic reaction. Dr. Shireen will work with you to determine the cause of the rash and the best course of action.
